The Beaches of João Pessoa

The beaches of João Pessoa, the capital of the State of Paraíba, are its main attractions. With warm weather present throughout the year, visitors enjoy spending their days in the warm waters and on the white sands, and then savoring the restaurants that serve seafood dishes.

The Ponta do Seixas, known for being the place where the sun rises first in Brazil (being the easternmost point of continental Brazil), is one of the most popular urban beaches in the city. There, you will find the Cabo Branco Lighthouse, which reaffirms that João Pessoa is the easternmost point of the Americas.

Tambaba was the first northeastern beach dedicated to naturism. Cabo Branco and its 40-meter cliffs, worn down by the ocean, offer unforgettable views. Overall, there are 30 km of beaches to choose from and explore.

The Praia do Jacaré is one of the charms of JP (one of the colloquial nicknames for the city) and attracts many visitors who go there to enjoy the sunset. Here, musicians play Ravel’s Bolero daily on rafts at dusk, in a colorful, special, and unforgettable spectacle. João Pessoa is one of the main producers of rapadura (a solid sugar product resulting from the processing of sugarcane) and cachaça (a sugarcane alcoholic beverage, not much different from rum, which forms the base of the Caipirinha cocktail) and has been since the golden age of sugar mills in the State.

In addition to the shellfish, abundant along the entire coast of Paraíba, two delights from the hinterland are considered typical of the region: carne de sol (sun-dried and salted beef) and buchada de bode (a dish made with goat’s kidneys, liver, and intestines). Carne de sol is usually served with manioc, green beans, and delicious butter from a bottle. Buchada de bode is a substantial dish, based on a variety of offal and prepared in the animal’s stomach.

Embroidery and crochet are among the most common craft techniques. They are used for bags, bedspreads, towels, and also applied to shirts. Local artisans are also experts in ceramic work.

In the historic center, recognized as a Brazilian National Historical Heritage, the buildings have different styles and are from various eras, in colonial, art nouveau, and art deco styles. The city center is considered to have the largest architectural collection in Paraíba.
