Criminals stole eight engravings by Henri Matisse and five engravings by Candido Portinari, all belonging to the exhibition “From Book to Museum: MAM São Paulo and the Mário de Andrade Library”.
The stolen works were part of an exhibition held in partnership with the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM). In an official statement, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy confirmed the number of pieces taken and emphasized that all the works have valid insurance policies.
“The department informs that the exhibited works have a valid insurance policy, and that the location has a security team and a security camera system. All material that may be useful for the investigation is being provided to the police authorities. The Military Police attended the incident, and the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM) reinforced the policing,” the department stated.
According to the Military Police, the two assailants overpowered the library’s security guards before fleeing towards Anhangabaú metro station. Teams from the region provided immediate assistance to the staff and began searches in the area, but so far no one has been arrested. There were no reports of injuries.
The São Paulo city hall informed that cameras from the Smart Sampa program identified the perpetrators of the crime.
