Criminals stole eight engravings by Henri Matisse and five engravings by Candido Portinari, all belonging to the exhibition “Do livro ao museu: MAM São Paulo e a Biblioteca Mário de Andrade”.
The stolen works were part of a show held in partnership with the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM). In an official statement, the Municipal Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy confirmed the number of pieces taken and emphasized that all the works have valid insurance policies.
“The department informs that the exhibited works have valid insurance policies, and that the location has a surveillance team and security camera system. All material that may serve the investigation is being provided to the police authorities. The Military Police attended the incident and the Municipal Civil Guard (GCM) reinforced policing,” the secretariat said.
According to the Military Police, the two assailants subdued the library’s security guards before fleeing toward Anhangabaú Metro station. Teams in the vicinity provided immediate assistance to the employees and began searches in the area, but so far no one has been arrested. There were no reports of injuries.
The São Paulo city hall informed that the Smart Sampa program cameras identified the crime’s perpetrators.
