As air travelers prepare to take off this Independence Day holiday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for a sustained period of high passenger volumes. The TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals from Thursday, June 27, through Monday, July 8, representing a 5.4% increase compared to travel volumes during the 2023 Independence Day holiday. On Sunday, June 23, the TSA broke the record for the highest number of people screened in a single day, processing nearly 3 million (2.99 million) individuals.
The TSA anticipates that the peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals. The TSA has sufficient staffing to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes or less in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes or less in standard screening lanes. Seven of the 10 busiest travel days on record occurred last month.
“We expect this summer to be the busiest on record, and summer travel typically peaks around the Independence Day holiday,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.
Air travelers should be aware that security screening technologies may vary by airport. While the TSA follows strict and standardized screening protocols, it is important for travelers to arrive early and follow the guidance provided by Transportation Security Officers (TSOs).
