President Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned a law on Thursday (27) that establishes taxation on international purchases up to $50 (approximately R$ 250), which were previously exempt from import tax. The new text includes a 20% charge on the value of purchases within this limit, which are very common on international sites like Shopee, AliExpress, and Shein.
The taxation was included in the Green Mobility and Innovation program (Mover), which creates incentives for the manufacturing of less polluting vehicles. The text was approved in the Chamber of Deputies on the 11th, with 380 votes in favor and 26 against.
Originally presented by the federal government, the Mover project foresees R$ 19.3 billion in incentives over five years and tax reductions for research and development of technologies and production of vehicles that emit fewer greenhouse gases, responsible for global warming and climate change.
The new tax will come into effect on August 1st. …
