Sérgio Moro and Michael Bloomberg Honored in New York

The Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce in New York announced Judge Sérgio Fernando Moro as the Brazilian honoree and Michael R. Bloomberg as the American honoree for the 2018 Person of the Year Awards.

For 48 years, the Chamber has honored two prominent leaders, one Brazilian and one American, as “Person of the Year” who have been particularly instrumental in forging closer ties and enhancing the relationship between Brazil and the United States.Judge Sérgio Fernando Moro

Judge Moro became a federal judge in 1996, a year after completing his law degree at the State University of Maringá in his home state of Paraná. He later received a Doctorate in Law from the Federal University of Paraná in 2002.

Before being called to preside over cases from Operation Lava Jato, Judge Moro worked on several other high-profile cases. Notably, at the request of a Supreme Court minister, Dr. Moro served as an auxiliary judge in the Mensalão case, which involved an unprecedented investigation into a vote-buying scheme in the Brazilian Congress, concluded in 2012.

Due to his leadership in the Lava Jato case, he was ranked 13th on Fortune’s List of the World’s Greatest Leaders in 2016. He also made the list of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People that same year and was 10th on Bloomberg Businessweek’s list of the 50 Most Influential People in Finance.Michael R. Bloomberg

Michael R. Bloomberg is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who served three terms as mayor of New York City. He grew up in a middle-class home in Medford, Massachusetts. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 1966, he was hired by Salomon Brothers, eventually managing the company’s Information Systems. In 1981, Mr. Bloomberg was laid off from Salomon during a corporate restructuring and launched Bloomberg LP with his partners in a one-room office. Together, they created a computer terminal that gave investors real-time access to Treasury bond prices. Today, Bloomberg LP is a global company with over 19,000 employees in more than 176 locations worldwide.

In 2002, he was elected the 108th mayor of New York, serving three terms. During his tenure, he promoted many significant improvements in the quality of life for New Yorkers. Upon leaving office at the end of 2013, Michael Bloomberg returned to the company he founded, dedicating more time to philanthropy, which has been a top priority for him tthroughout his life. In 2014, Bloomberg was appointed UN Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change and, in 2016, began serving as the WHO’s global ambassador for non-communicable diseases.

Today, Bloomberg Philanthropies takes a unique data-driven approach to global change, which emerged from his experiences as an entrepreneur and mayor. In addition to Bloomberg’s various philanthropic activities aimed at ensuring better and longer lives for the greatest number of people, he has joined The Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.

The nomination of Judge Moro and Michael Bloomberg was widely proposed by members and unanimously approved by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The Board comprises a broad spectrum of leading Brazilian and American companies active in both countries.

Judge Sérgio Moro and Michael Bloomberg will be honored at the 2018 Person of the Year Awards Gala, which will take place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Tuesday, May 15. Over 800 leaders from the international business, financial, and diplomatic communities gather annually in New York at this traditional gala to pay tribute to the honorees.
