Rhapsody in Blue

A special night where sound, color and emotion come together in a unique artistic experience. Rhapsody in Blue celebrates the encounter between contemporary jazz and the visual arts, bringing together recognized talents from New York’s cultural scene in an engaging and inspiring presentation.

The soundtrack of the night will be led by jazz singer Deanna Kirk, accompanied by guitarist Mark Capon. With a striking voice and sophisticated interpretation, Deanna has built a career recognized for uniting jazz, cabaret and art-rock influences, being compared by critics to artists such as Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan. An emblematic figure of the New York scene, she was the owner of the legendary club “Deanna’s” in Manhattan’s East Village, a meeting point for musicians and artists in the 1990s. She currently continues to perform in renowned New York jazz venues such as Smalls Jazz Club and Mezzrow, in addition to composing music for film and television.

In dialogue with the music, visual artist Rene Nascimento will present his vibrant artistic vision. A Brazilian painter based in New York, Rene graduated from the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and also studied at FAAP in São Paulo, at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro and at the Art Students League of New York. His work ranges between portraits, large urban murals and his acclaimed “NYC Bicycles” series, exhibited in Brazil, the United States and Europe. Recognized for promoting Brazilian art and culture in the USA, Rene brings to his works the pulsating energy of the city and the sensitivity of a cosmopolitan gaze.

Rhapsody in Blue promises an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere, where painting and music improvise together, creating a living dialogue between image and sound. A celebration of creativity, artistic freedom and the cultural connection between Brazil and New York.

The inspiration behind the “Rhapsody in Blue” series

Living across from the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, on the Upper West Side, Rene discovered a special connection with the history of American music: it was precisely in the building located across the street that George Gershwin composed, in 1924, the iconic work Rhapsody in Blue.

Originally titled American Rhapsody, the composition received its definitive name at the suggestion of Ira Gershwin, after visiting an exhibition of the paintings of James McNeill Whistler.

Inspired by this story, Rene began to paint a series of abstract works while observing from the window of his studio the building where Gershwin lived, listening in the background to the unforgettable melody of Rhapsody in Blue. From this experience was born a collection that translates into colors, forms and movement the essence of New York City and the timeless musicality of Gershwin.

An experience to feel, hear and contemplate.
