São Francisco River Supplies Thousands in Sergipe

The dredging works of the São Francisco River section in the state of Sergipe have been completed, ensuring water supply for over 700,000 people. The announcement was made by the São Francisco Valley Development Company (Codevasf).

In total, 1,940 meters of the intake channel of the Propriá Integrated System and the São Francisco Water Supply System were dredged. The emergency intervention prevented the collapse of water supply in Propriá, Telha, Cedro de São João, and the Greater Aracaju area, enabling the proper functioning of the pumping systems even with the reduced flow of the São Francisco River.

The regional superintendent of Codevasf, César Mandarino, highlighted the speed and efficiency of the service execution. “The action was a success. Codevasf fulfilled its part, and the works were completed ahead of schedule. The dredging improved the water supply in the benefiting cities, ensuring water provision for thousands of people. We are very satisfied with the result,” Mandarino stated.

Initiated on November 19 of last year, the dredging was completed ahead of the expected 120-day timeframe. In total, 1,940 meters of the intake channel of the Propriá Integrated System and the São Francisco Water Supply System were dredged. The work was carried out by Codevasf in partnership with the Sergipe Sanitation Company (Deso).

Civil engineer Francisco de Assis Melo, a Regional Development analyst at Codevasf and responsible for overseeing and monitoring the work, highlighted the positive impact of the action. “Before the dredging service, the most critical section had a depth of 20 centimeters. With the dredging, we left the entire length of the channel with a minimum depth of 2 meters,” he explained.

During the execution of the work, dredging of the channel and its widening at points where there was a bottleneck in water flow were carried out. The action also included the cleaning and removal of macrophytes and the performance of bathymetric services.

The action involved an investment of R$ 1.9 million in resources from the National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense of the Ministry of National Integration.
