Parque das Grutas – The Brasilians
,

The Grutas de Botuverá are located in Santa Catarina, 15 km from the center of Botuverá. They have approximately 1200 meters in length and are composed of various speleothems (sculptures made by water), such as travertines, curtains, cauliflower, starry floors, cracks, alleys, stalactites, stalagmites, and passages distributed in labyrinths and halls. It constitutes an unparalleled set, eternally marked by drops of water that have been dripping continuously from the ceiling for hundreds and thousands of years.

The cave features numerous halls that reach up to 20 meters in height, populated by figures, columns, and calcite drips among other shapes.

There is a single known entrance, and the beginning of its development occurs on a clay floor with limestone blocks.

From the first 50 meters, the wide halls that compose it can be glimpsed. The first one displays at the entrance, to the left, a column with a diameter of 2 to 3 meters. The floor, resembling calcitic runoff, leads to the larger space where a wall with columns of 10 to 15 cm in diameter of stalactites and stalagmites can be observed, forming a shape similar to a beautiful pipe organ.

From the position of the pipe organ, the cave offers three directions: to the right, which leads to the Orchid Hall, populated by beautiful aragonite flowers; the central path leads to a nearly dry small lake; and to the left, access to the rest of the cave is offered. This access allows reaching the halls of the Nativity Gallery, the Altars, the Candelabras, the Pulpit, and the Small Image, where beautiful shapes are highlighted.

The mentioned halls concentrate most of the galleries. In addition to the shapes that give rise to the names of the halls, there are equally interesting forms, such as elevations on calcitic runoff floors, travertines, silica in box-works, candles, alligators, and columns.

The stalactite gallery is the last one that can be reached and extends horizontally through a 130-meter tunnel from the Altars Hall, practically without communications, in a wide lateral and vertical space.

The cave is populated by stalactites and stalagmites. The most adorned part is the central portion, wider, between the position of the organ and the entrance of the stalactite gallery, where various forms and calcitic structures are found, and the halls offer greater ease of intercommunication. Several amphitheaters can be accessed easily.

Currently, some areas of the cave are restricted, considering the determination of the Park Management Plan, with the sole and exclusive purpose of not harming the formations and biological diversity.

The cavity was formed by the dissolution of carboniferous rocks from the Precambrian period, at least 65 million years ago, and is characterized by having galleries and wide halls adorned with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and other formations.

The biological diversity in this cave is considered high for a cavity without a watercourse in Brazil. Seven species of bats and more than 35 species of invertebrates have been recorded.

In this aspect, it stands out in the national speleological context due to the occurrence of 6 endemic species (exclusive to the location) and highly specialized invertebrates. Only 10 Brazilian caves have such a significant number of troglobites (species of life restricted to caves).

Since 1998, the Municipal Government of Botuverá, with the support of the National Environmental Fund (Ministry of the Environment) and advised by the Açungui Speleological Studies Group (an institution focused on the protection of natural cavities), has initiated various studies for the elaboration and implementation of the Speleological Heritage Management Plan.

The studies defined the necessary measures to offer the population a quality tourism option, in which the main concern is the protection of the cave environment.

With complete infrastructure for tourists or for those who want to spend pleasant moments in contact with nature, the park offers barbecue grills, a food court, and provides parking for cars and a dedicated area for buses.

For those who cannot visit the caves, it is possible to take a trail through the forest to a waterfall.
