The Pink Dolphins of Novo Airão – The Brasilians

The Pink Dolphins of Novo Airão

Access is via the Manoel Urbano road (BR-319), which is being duplicated. The road requires a lot of care while driving, as there are many stretches in poor condition.Upon arriving in Novo Airão, there’s no mistake. The town is small, and you should follow the signs to the tourist terminal (port), where you can see directional signs for the dolphin floating platform.

At the location, there is an improvised parking area in front of a resident’s house, who charges a fee per car. The floating platform is located on the beach, which you access via a wooden staircase.

It used to be allowed to swim with the dolphins, but that is no longer possible. You can only touch them at the moment they are being fed.

The contact between tourist groups and the dolphins is done at scheduled times. Before heading to the river access platform, a guide gives a quick presentation about the history of the place, with information and curiosities about this freshwater mammal.

Afterward, you follow the guide to watch the feeding of the animals, which live freely in the river. Playful, the dolphins swim vertically to catch fish, delighting visitors who can touch them.

The pink dolphins, also known as red dolphins, became an attraction in Novo Airão thanks to Dona Marilda, the owner of the floating platform where a restaurant used to operate. She and her children began feeding the dolphins, abundant in the region, who started visiting the place daily in search of easy food.

The animals began to interact with the family, who swam and played with them. They became the main attraction of the restaurant and later the town, attracting media attention and gaining national and international prominence.

Today, the location is a dolphin observation point and is under the care of environmental protection agencies.

One of the most well-known Amazonian legends is that of the boto. The legend says that on full moon nights, the pink dolphin transforms into an attractive young man with a handsome physique.

Always wearing a hat and well-dressed, he visits the communities near the river to charm and seduce beautiful girls. After getting a woman pregnant, he transforms back into a dolphin. Therefore, among the riverside dwellers, when a woman appeared pregnant and the father was unknown, it was said that the child was fathered by the dolphin.
