Photographer Valdir Cruz Presents “Presenças”

Throckmorton Fine Art announces a special 20th anniversary exhibition of photographs from Guggenheim featuring the award-winning Brazilian photographer Valdir Cruz. The exhibition will be available until February 24, 2018. Presenças is Cruz’s seventh solo exhibition at Throckmorton Fine Art in New York. It is a vintage selection, gelatin silver prints from three projects: Faces da Mata, Caminho da Água (The Path of Waters), and raízes (Roots).

Faces da Mata: The photographs of indigenous peoples are captured from six years of expeditions in the remote areas of the Brazilian and Venezuelan rainforests. Cruz did not limit himself to visiting these tribes. He spent over five months living with them and participated in their daily lives. The candor of these images reflects the familiar terms of his relationship.
Caminho da Água (The Path of Waters): With the same intensity, Cruz has photographed the waterfalls of his home state, Paraná, over many years.
Raízes (Roots): Cruz photographed the extraordinary trees of São Paulo state, resulting in a collection called “portraits.”

Over the last three decades, Cruz narrates, through his lenses, unique and ephemeral places in Brazil, where people and landscapes create an indelible impression on the viewer.

Cruz has lived here in the United States for over thirty years, where he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996 with Faces da Mata. Since 1996, Valdir Cruz has published ten photography books.

Cruz is represented in the permanent collections of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the New York Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
