Traffic Deaths in Brazil Decrease

The number of deaths from traffic accidents in Brazil has decreased by 14% since the implementation of the Dry Law in 2008. According to the Ministry of Health’s Mortality Information System, there were 32,615 recorded deaths in 2017, compared to 38,273 ten years ago.

The reduction in the number of fatal victims was observed in three regions: Central-West, Southeast, and South, while there was an increase in the North and Northeast.

Compared to 2012, when the law became stricter and increased fines for drivers under the influence, the difference was even greater. That year, there were 44,812 fatal victims, 12,197 more than last year. However, the number of hospitalizations related to traffic accidents has increased over the past ten years.
