Contract Signed for Dredging Works at the Port of Santos

The Ministry of Transport, Ports and Civil Aviation has authorized the start of the dredging process at the Port of Santos (SP). The estimated investment of R$ 369 million will enable an increase in the depth of the access channels, evolution basins, and berthing areas of the Santos terminal, providing greater safety for navigation.

The dredging is also expected to increase the capacity for vessel movement and reduce freight costs. “By increasing the capacity for movement, we will see a decrease in freight costs, an increase in competitiveness at the national level, bringing benefits that will certainly reach the final consumers,” emphasizes the minister of the department, Maurício Quintella. The company responsible for the dredging maintenance works and services will be Van Oord.

The company will have 17 months to complete the services. It is estimated that for every centimeter gained in depth, the capacity of vessels will increase by up to eight containers, which corresponds to an average of 100 tons.Porto de Santos

The Port of Santos ranks first in the movement of Organized Ports and transports one-third of the products moved in the country. Additionally, it is the leader in container movement, with 3.8 million TEUs (six meters or 20 feet) in 2015; and in the export of sugar and soybean grains.

The accumulated cargo movement at the Port of Santos in 2016 reached 113.8 million tons, the third best in the entire historical series of the port for the period, only 5.1% lower than the record movement recorded in 2015.

Imports registered a volume of 32.4 million tons, a result higher than the accumulated total until December 2015. Exports accumulated 81.4 million tons during the period. In total, there were 4,723 dockings in the year 2016.
