Olympic Athletes to be Vaccinated Against Covid-19

The Brazilian Government will immunize athletes, technical staff, and those involved in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games against Covid-19. According to the Ministry of Health, 1,814 people accredited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be vaccinated.

The list includes athletes and officials already qualified or with chances of participating in the Olympic Games, as well as Brazilians who will work in Japan, such as technical staff and accredited media, according to the Brazilian Olympic Committee.

“We will vaccinate our Olympic athletes and technical commissions to ensure that these athletes can perform their best at the Tokyo Olympic Games and bring home many medals to further adorn the glorious Brazilian sport,” said Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga.

According to the Ministry of Health, 4,050 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be used, considering the necessary days for vaccination and the time for immune response. The National Immunization Program (PNI) will also receive a donation of 8,000 doses from the Sinovac laboratory, which developed Coronavac.

The vaccination will begin on May 12, but according to the Ministry of Health, dates may vary depending on the availability in each state.

The Olympic Games will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021. The Paralympics will be held from August 24 to September 5, 2021.
