The FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department are investigating one of the largest cash heists in the city’s history after approximately $30 million was stolen from a cash depot in San Fernando Valley.
The robbery occurred on Easter Sunday night (31) at an undisclosed facility in Sylmar, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley suburb, where cash from local businesses is handled and stored, according to a police source.
The thieves gained access to the building and entered the vault without triggering alarms, and investigators believe it is a sophisticated group due to their ability to enter unnoticed, the source said. A focus of the investigation is whether the group had inside knowledge of the facility, the source added, noting that the robbery was discovered on Monday (1).
Sources familiar with the investigation told the Los Angeles Times that the thieves crossed the roof of the Gardaworld building on Roxford Street to gain access to the vault. But it is unclear how they evaded the alarm system.

To add to the intrigue, very few individuals would have knowledge of the enormous sums of money being kept in that vault, according to police sources.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the largest cash heist in the city occurred on September 12, 1997, when $18.9 million was stolen from the former Dunbar Armored Inc. facility on Mateo Street. Those suspects were later apprehended.
