Lula and Biden Discussed Climate Cooperation

President Joe Biden of the United States and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil demonstrated a continuous joint effort on priority global and regional issues.

Last month, the two leaders discussed climate cooperation and preparations for COP28, including President Biden’s commitment to request $500 million from Congress over five years to support the Amazon Fund and related activities, as well as ongoing efforts to help mobilize up to $1 billion in support of restoring degraded lands in Brazil and the Amazon region through the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.

The president praised Brazil’s regional and global leadership on climate, including hosting the Amazon Summit and the Amazon Dialogues to articulate a common agenda for sustainable development, combating deforestation, and addressing social and economic inequalities, in addition to anticipating U.S. plans for a future “green trade mission” to Brazil in September to promote investments in forests, land use, and energy.

President Biden and President Lula also committed to working together to advance and protect workers’ rights and promote inclusive prosperity for both countries and the world. They also pledged to maintain active communication regarding the situation in Venezuela and Haiti.
