Luis Fernando Verissimo Admitted to ICU at Hospital in Porto Alegre

The writer Luis Fernando Verissimo was admitted this weekend to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Hospital Moinhos de Vento, in Porto Alegre (RS).

According to family and friends, the medical team is treating the onset of pneumonia and other symptoms related to the chronicler’s health conditions.

In a statement released late Sunday afternoon, the hospital reported that Verissimo’s condition is serious and that he continues to receive all necessary support measures.

The chronicler has Parkinson’s disease, heart problems, and suffered a stroke in 2021. A year later, he received a pacemaker in his heart.

At 88 years old, Verissimo has a dynamic professional career as a cartoonist, translator, screenwriter, advertiser, proofreader, playwright, and novelist. His work is marked by good humor, assertiveness, and criticism. Besides words, he is a music lover, dedicated to practicing the saxophone.

Son of the writer Érico Verissimo, Luis Fernando Verissimo has published more than 80 titles, including As Mentiras Que os Homens Contam, O Popular: crônicas ou coisa parecida, A Grande Mulher Nua and Ed Mort e Outras Histórias.

It was the chronicles and short stories that made him one of the most popular contemporary writers in the country. O Analista de Bagé, released in 1981, had its first edition sold out in a week.
