A statement from the Holy See Press Office highlighted this Sunday (17) that Pope Leo XIV renewed his appeal for peace during the traditional Angelus prayer, held at noon in Castel Gandolfo. The information was released by the Prensa Latina agency.
In front of the faithful and pilgrims gathered in Liberty Square, in front of the Apostolic Palace of the Pontifical Villas, the pontiff asked for prayers so that “efforts to end wars and promote peace may be successful”.
The common good above all
In his speech, Leo XIV emphasized that “the common good of people must always come first” in negotiations seeking to end armed conflicts. According to a Vatican News report, the Holy Father’s statements directly referenced the ongoing mediation processes both in Ukraine and the Middle East.
In the case of the Middle East, the Vatican’s concern is with the escalation of violence following Tel Aviv’s announcement of its intention to militarily occupy the Gaza Strip, which could further aggravate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
International relations and ceasefire attempts
According to the outlet, the pope also referred to the negotiations attempting to establish a lasting ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow. These efforts gained new momentum after the summit held on August 15 between the President of the United States, Donald Trump, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
The meeting between the two leaders was interpreted as a sign of openness to possible diplomatic advances, although experts remain cautious about concrete results.
