Lô Borges, MPB genius, is in serious condition after undergoing tracheostomy

The singer and songwriter Lô Borges, one of the greatest names in Brazilian popular music and a central figure in the legendary Clube da Esquina movement, is hospitalized in serious but stable condition at a hospital in Belo Horizonte.

According to his press office, as cited by Folha de S.Paulo, the artist underwent a tracheostomy over the weekend and remains on mechanical ventilation. Lô has been in the ICU for ten days after suffering medication intoxication, and there is still no expected discharge date.

Icon of a generation and soul of Clube da Esquina

Born in Belo Horizonte in 1952, Lô Borges is considered one of the great geniuses of MPB. Alongside Milton Nascimento and Beto Guedes, he was one of the pillars of Clube da Esquina—a musical movement that revolutionized Brazilian sound in the 1970s, blending rock, jazz, bossa nova, and regional Minas Gerais music into a sophisticated and poetic fusion.

His album Clube da Esquina, released in 1972 in partnership with Milton, is recognized as one of the masterpieces of Brazilian music. The album featured classics like O Trem Azul and Tudo Que Você Podia Ser, songs that marked generations and influenced artists in Brazil and abroad.

A career of constant renewal

Even after the peak of the movement, Lô Borges remained active and creative over the decades. In recent years, he released the albums Chama Viva and Não Me Espere na Estção, reaffirming his talent and musical sensitivity. In recent interviews, the singer stated that he has been producing more now than in his youth, demonstrating his eternal artistic restlessness.

Before the hospitalization, the musician was on tour with Beto Guedes, presenting the show Esquina & Canções, a celebration of the friendship and musical partnership that helped build one of the most beautiful chapters in MPB history.

Lô Borges remains an unavoidable reference in Brazilian music—an artist who transformed Minas Gerais sensitivity into universal art and whose work continues to move and inspire new generations.
