The Iranian government responded vehemently to the unprecedented US bombing of three nuclear facilities on its territory. This offensive, carried out on the order of US President Donald Trump, marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries and is seen by Iran as a direct violation of national sovereignty, an apparent injustice, and a breach of international law. The Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Seyed Abdolrahim Musavi, declared: “The US government has given a blank check to the [Iranian] Armed Forces to take any action against its interests and its army, and we will never back down on this issue.” He accused Washington of acting as an extension of what he called the “aggressive Zionist regime” by directly attacking Iranian territory and deliberately breaking the basic principles of international law.
The US bombing occurred in the early hours of Sunday (22) and targeted sensitive facilities of the Iranian nuclear program. The action follows attacks carried out by Israel against military and civilian targets in Iran, which began on June 13. These attacks, according to the government in Tehran, resulted in the deaths of nuclear scientists, high-ranking military commanders, and dozens of civilians.
In response, Iran launched Operation ‘True Promise III’, a military operation targeting territories occupied by Israel, and now promises to expand its response. ‘Every time the Americans committed crimes, they received a strong response, and this time it will be the same,’ warned the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Army, Major General Amir Hatami. He participated in a video conference with the country’s top military commanders and praised the efforts of the Iranian armed forces in the current situation.
Hatami also stated that ‘the plans drawn up by the Hazrat Jatam al-Anbia headquarters and the Zolfaqar operational command of the army, two key strategic units of the Iranian military forces, must be implemented with creativity, initiative, and intelligence,’ and reinforced the armed forces’ commitment to defending the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic.
The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baqai, echoed the warning, stating that “the United States and the Zionist regime must bear the consequences of this conflict.” He called the joint attacks a violation of the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). He emphasized that the country will exercise “its legitimate right to self-defense.”
“The region has been brought to an unprecedented danger,” said Baqai, referring to the regional impact of the bombings and Washington’s direct involvement in the conflict. Although he did not specify how the retaliation would occur, the spokesman reiterated that the response would come at the time and in the manner determined by the Iranian authorities. He also criticized President Donald Trump, stating that he “betrayed diplomacy” and could no longer present himself as a defender of dialogue.
At UN headquarters, the Iranian ambassador Amir Said Iravani requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council and stated that his country “reserves the full and legitimate right to self-defense.” According to him, the nature, timing, and scope of the response will be determined by the Armed Forces, in accordance with the principles of international law.
Iran accused the United States of colluding with Israel to destabilize the region and target its strategic nuclear program. The repercussions of the retaliation promised by Tehran remain shrouded in uncertainty, but the growing tension is already causing widespread apprehension, underscoring the volatile and unpredictable nature of the situation.
