Brazilian Football Continues in Mourning: Roberto Dinamite Laid to Rest at São Januário

The body of Roberto Dinamite is laid to rest at the São Januário Stadium this Monday (9).

“For those who wish to say goodbye to the greatest scorer in the history of Vasco, the Brasileirão, the Carioca, and all the classics of Rio de Janeiro, the wake will take place this Monday (9) from 10 AM to 7 PM. The body will be on the field at São Januário, near the location of Roberto’s statue. Public entry will be through gate 3. Vasco members can access through the social entrance,” says a note released on Sunday (8).

The wake will continue on Tuesday (10), for family and invited guests, between 9 AM and 10 AM. Afterwards, Roberto Dinamite’s body will be taken at 10:30 AM by a Fire Department vehicle to the Nossa Senhora de Belém Cemetery in Duque de Caxias, where he will be buried.

The greatest idol in Vasco’s history, Roberto Dinamite passed away on Sunday (8) at the age of 68. While treating intestinal cancer, the former player was hospitalized last Saturday (7) in a Rio de Janeiro hospital after showing a worsening condition.

A Vasco idol, he played 1,110 matches wearing the cross-malt shirt, was the club’s top scorer with 708 goals, and won the Campeonato Brasileiro in 1974, as well as five editions of the Campeonato Carioca (1977, 1982, 1987, 1988, and 1992).

On social media, the São Januário team mourned the death of Roberto Dinamite, who was club president from 2008 to 2014: “It is with the deepest sorrow that Vasco da Gama receives the news that the #GreatestOfAll has left us this Sunday. Carlos Roberto de Oliveira, Dinamite, dedicated 29 of his 68 years to the club as an athlete and president. We will love you forever, Calu. Rest in peace.”

Born in Duque de Caxias, Carlos Roberto de Oliveira made his professional debut for Vasco in 1971 in a match against Bahia valid for the Campeonato Brasileiro. In 1992 he left football, but the following year a farewell friendly match was held between Vasco and La Coruña (Spain) at Maracanã.

Among the achievements of his successful career, Dinamite, who had the gift of shaking the opponent’s nets, is the top scorer in the history of the Campeonato Brasileiro (with 190 goals), the top scorer in the history of the State Championship of Rio de Janeiro (with 279 goals), and the top scorer in the history of São Januário (with 184 goals).
