The Law School of the University of São Paulo (IUSP) and social movements called for demonstrations on Monday (9) in defense of democracy and for the punishment of those involved in the invasion of the headquarters of the Three Powers on Sunday (8) in Brasília.
The first act took place at noon in the Noble Hall of the Law School of USP, located in downtown São Paulo. In the evening, a protest closed seven blocks of Avenida Paulista in São Paulo, gathering thousands of people. Another protest concentrated in Cinelândia, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, bringing together hundreds of demonstrators. Other acts in favor of democracy were reported in other capitals across the country.
In Brasília, representatives of the three powers of the Republic gathered to show unity in the face of attacks on democracy and the Brazilian State that occurred on Sunday.
In addition to governors, the meeting included the President of the Supreme Federal Court, Minister Rosa Weber, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, the interim President of the Federal Senate, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo, the President of the National Front of Mayors, Edvaldo Nogueira, and Attorney General Augusto Aras, along with government ministers and parliamentarians.
On this occasion, Lula spoke:
“We will not allow democracy to slip from our hands, because it is the only chance we have to ensure that these humble people can eat three times a day or have the right to work. In the name of defending democracy, we will not be authoritarian with anyone, but we will not be lukewarm with anyone either. We will investigate and we will reach those who financed it,” he said.
At the end of the meeting, President Lula and all participants crossed the Plaza of the Three Powers to the building of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) to express solidarity with the institution, its president, and ministers. The interior of the STF building, especially the plenary, was completely destroyed by the terrorists. During the meeting, President Rosa Weber informed that the STF will resume its activities normally on February 1.
