Forró in the Dark Releases New Album – The Brasilians

Forró in the Dark Releases New Album

Forró in the Dark is a Brazilian forró band with a party vibe in New York City. Their home base is Nublu in the East Village, where they frequently perform at the Brazilian Wednesday night party at Nublu.

The band has just released their latest album Sandcastle.

Forró in the Dark has been together since 2002. The band originated from a jam session at Nublu. The current lineup includes Mauro Refosco (zabumba, percussion), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar), and Jorge Continentino (pífaros, flutes, saxophones). All the musicians participate in various musical projects. Mauro records and tours with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Continentino is the leading Brazilian flutist in New York.

What stands out most about Forró in the Dark is Refosco’s pulsating beat and the sung triangle. Monteiro takes the place of the traditional accordion. On top of that, Continentino’s cheerful melodies. A variety of guest singers results in truly fun music with unexpected touches.

On the band’s debut album, Bonfires of São João (2006), you can hear contributions from David Byrne of Talking Heads, Bebel Gilberto, the queen of electronic bossa nova, and a surprisingly wonderful performance with Japanese singer Miho Hatori.

Light a Candle from 2009 features vocals by Sabina Sciubba of Brazilian Girls, another band that emerged from Nublu around that time.
