Brazilian singer and songwriter Flávia Bittencourt brings a taste of the rich and diverse culture of her home state, Maranhão, to the United States through her latest album, “Leve.” She launched the CD/DVD in New York with a pocket show called “Voice and Rhythm” at the Saphira & Ventura gallery on May 17.
Flávia Bittencourt is one of Brazil’s most acclaimed new singers and songwriters. Her cultural roots are evident in her repertoire, which naturally transitions between her compositions and those of songwriters from around the world.
She gained national fame in Brazil when one of her songs was chosen for a soap opera that reached an audience of 950,000 people at its peak. Flávia has toured Europe and brought her original interpretations of traditional Brazilian folk music to Angola. She remains an independent artist with a very strong sense of identity.
Recorded by Coqueiro Verde Records at the Teatro Arthur Azevedo in São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, “Leve” celebrates Flávia’s 10-year career. With a repertoire composed of original songs and works by renowned authors, the singer boldly travels through diverse rhythms, offering a plurality of content and creating a unique and wholly Brazilian sound. This album features contributions from Luiz Melodia, Zeca Baleiro, Bloco Tradicional Os Feras, Alcione, and Antulio Madureira.
