O Agente Secreto Film to Represent Brazil at the 2026 Oscars – The Brasilians

O Agente Secreto Film to Represent Brazil at the 2026 Oscars

The Brazilian Academy of Cinema announced this Monday (15) that the film O Agente Secreto, by Kléber Mendonça Filho, will be Brazil’s representative at the 2026 Oscars, in the Best International Feature category.

Starring actor Wagner Moura, the film is set in 1977, during the military dictatorship. The feature follows Marcelo, a technology professor who tries to start a new life in Recife, but ends up immersed in a world of espionage and paranoia.

O Agente Secreto, which has not yet premiered in national theaters, has already won several international awards, including Best Director for Kleber Mendonça Filho and Best Actor for Wagner Moura at the Cannes Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious film awards.

Step-by-Step of the Competition

Being selected as Brazil’s representative for the Oscars does not guarantee the film a nomination.

Each country submits one film as its representative for the competition. From these submissions, the Oscars selects the films that will actually compete for the world’s most famous film award. The ceremony presenting the Oscar statuettes is scheduled for March 15, 2026.

The other films on the shortlist were Baby, by Marcelo Caetano; Kasa Branca, by Luciano Vidigal; Manas, by Marianna Brennand; O Último Azul, by Gabriel Mascaro; and Oeste Outra Vez, by Erico Rassi.

Earlier this year, Brazil won its first Oscar with the film Ainda Estou Aqui, by Walter Salles, in the Best International Feature category.
