Fernanda Torres Wins Golden Globe for “Ainda Estou Aqui” – The Brasilians

Fernanda Torres Wins Golden Globe for “Ainda Estou Aqui”

Brazilian cinema celebrates a historic achievement: actress Fernanda Torres received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Drama on Sunday (January 5) in Los Angeles, USA.

The award, the first ever given to a Brazilian actress, recognizes Fernanda Torres’s performance in the film “Ainda Estou Aqui”. In the production, she plays Eunice Paiva, a lawyer and widow of Rubens Paiva, a federal deputy murdered by the military dictatorship in 1971.

Torres competed against Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson, and Kate Winslet.

25 years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, Fernanda Torres’s mother, was nominated in the same category for her performance in “Central do Brasil”. Although she did not win, the film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.

“This award is proof that art endures, even in the difficult times faced by Eunice Paiva and in the many challenges the world grapples with today. This film makes us reflect on how to persevere in times like these. To my mother, my family, my children, and everyone, thank you very much, and thank you to the Golden Globe,” Torres said in her acceptance speech.

Both “Ainda Estou Aqui” and “Central do Brasil” were directed by filmmaker Walter Salles.

This year, the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film was awarded to the French production Emilia Pérez.
