Fernanda Torres Wins Golden Globe for Performance in ‘Ainda Estou Aqui’

Brazilian cinema is experiencing a historic moment. Actress Fernanda Torres received the Golden Globe for Best Actress in the Drama category this Monday (6) in Los Angeles, United States.

The award, given for the first time to a Brazilian, is a recognition of Fernanda’s work in the film ‘Ainda Estou Aqui’. In the production, she plays lawyer Eunice Paiva, widow of Rubens Paiva, a federal deputy murdered by the military dictatorship in 1971.

Fernanda was competing against major Hollywood stars such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson, and Kate Winslet.

25 years ago, Fernanda Montenegro, Fernanda Torres’ mother, was nominated in the same category for her performance in ‘Central do Brasil’. She did not win, but the film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

“This is proof that art endures in life, even during difficult times that Eunice Paiva went through and with so many problems today in the world. This is a film that helped us think about how to survive in times like these. So, for my mother, for my family, for my children, and for everyone, thank you very much to the Golden Globes,” said Fernanda during her acceptance speech.

Both ‘Ainda Estou Aqui’ and ‘Central do Brasil’ were directed by filmmaker Walter Salles.

This year, in the Best Foreign Language Film category, the Golden Globe went to the French production ‘Emilia Pérez’.
