Brazil has begun exploring primary diamonds: the deposit, found in the municipality of Nordestina, is expected to double the country’s production and export this year and increase current volumes by 5 to 10 times in the coming years.
In addition to Nordestina, the Diamonds of Brazil project, coordinated by the Geological Service of Brazil (CPRM), has revealed several areas with great potential for the discovery of primary diamonds (primary diamond deposits are those from which rough diamonds are extracted directly from the source rock).
While these areas are not fully studied, “secondary” diamonds continue to be found by prospectors and small miners, mainly in the regions of Coromandel and Diamantina (state of Minas Gerais) and in some areas of the states of Goiás, Pará, and Roraima. The project also showed that the vast majority of Brazilian states have some occurrence of diamonds.
