The Clube do Samba is now Cultural and Intangible Heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The law sanctioned by the state governor, Cláudio Castro, was published in the edition of the Official Gazette this Thursday (4). For the Fluminense executive, the measure consolidates the space “as a fundamental reference in the preservation and appreciation of samba”.
Since it was founded in 1979 in the Meier neighborhood in the city’s north zone by singer and composer João Nogueira, the Clube do Samba has been the home of major gatherings of Brazilian popular music exponents and artists from new generations. The foundation had the participation of stars like Beth Carvalho, Martinho da Vila, Clara Nunes, Alcione, Cartola, Dona Ivone Lara, among other sambistas.
On its website, the Clube do Samba calls itself a Movement for art, culture, education, and Brazilian identity through music, where it develops activities ranging from samba circles and dances to workshops and educational projects, maintains the tradition of roots samba, and promotes the cultural education of young people.
“We have as our base our sociocultural project that serves children and adolescents free of charge with classes in singing, cavaquinho, theater, guitar, percussion, and capoeira. All our projects, events, and actions open space and showcase new music talents,” says the website.
In January 2025, the Clube do Samba had already been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro.
“Now, with the sanctioning of the new law, this recognition gains strength at the state level, expanding institutional protection and strengthening the possibility of public policies aimed at the preservation and promotion of the space,” says a note from the state government.
Governor Cláudio Castro stated that declaring the Clube do Samba as intangible heritage of the state reinforces the state’s commitment to the cultural roots that shaped Rio’s identity.
“This space is a symbol of resistance, memory, and celebration of our popular music and deserves all the institutional recognition worthy of this legacy,” said the governor.
