Brazilian Adolpho Veloso Nominated for Best Cinematography Oscar – The Brasilians

Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso has reached one of the most landmark moments in his career by being nominated for the Oscar for best cinematography. A native of São Paulo, the professional is competing with the work done in “Sonhos de trem”, a drama directed by Clint Bentley and starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. The nomination was announced on the morning of this Thursday (22) and solidifies the Brazilian among the main names in the field in world cinema.

Before reaching the Oscars, Veloso had won the Critics’ Choice Awards and been nominated by the American Society of Cinematographers, in addition to competing for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, one of the most important awards in American independent cinema.

The work on “Sonhos de trem” marks the resumption of the partnership between Adolpho Veloso and Clint Bentley, begun with the film “Jockey” (2021). The collaboration arose after the American filmmaker watched the documentary “On Yoga: Arquitetura da paz” (2017), directed by Heitor Dhalia and photographed by Veloso. The combination of documentary style and fiction was key to selecting the Brazilian, who became a central element in the visual construction of the feature.

Trained in cinema in São Paulo, Veloso worked across various sectors of the audiovisual industry before fully dedicating himself to cinematography. Throughout his career, he has worked on short films, features, documentaries, advertising, and music videos, showcasing technical and aesthetic versatility. Among his music projects, standout clips include “Ameianoite”, a collaboration between Pabllo Vittar and Gloria Groove, and “Diamantes, lágrimas e rostos para esquecer” by rapper BK.

Internationally recognized, the cinematographer also maintains a strong tie to Brazilian cinema. In his national filmography, highlights include the dramas “Tungstênio” (2018), again with Heitor Dhalia, and “Rodantes” (2021), directed by Leandro Lara. Since 2019, Veloso has lived in Portugal, where he shot the war film “Mosquito” (2020) by João Nuno Pinto, filmed between the European country and Mozambique.

Even while living abroad, the cinematographer keeps up an intense travel schedule, alternating projects in the United States with frequent visits to his home country. Recently, he wrapped filming on “Remain”, the new feature written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and one of the most anticipated titles in international cinema.

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony is set for March 15 and will be hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. Adolpho Veloso’s nomination strengthens the Brazilian presence among the industry’s top global names and underscores the international recognition of his visual language.
