Brazilian Adolpho Veloso Nominated for Oscar for Best Cinematography

Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso has reached one of the most significant moments in his career by being nominated for the Oscar for Best Cinematography. A native of São Paulo, the professional is competing for his work on “Train Dreams”, a drama directed by Clint Bentley and starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. The nomination was announced on the morning of Thursday (22) and solidifies the Brazilian among the top names in the field in world cinema.

Before reaching the Oscars, Veloso had won the Critics Choice Awards and was among the nominees of the Cinematographers Guild of America, in addition to also competing for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, one of the most important awards in American independent cinema.

The work on “Train Dreams” marks the resumption of the partnership between Adolpho Veloso and Clint Bentley, which began with the film “Jockey” (2021). The collaboration arose after the American filmmaker watched the documentary “On Yoga: Architecture of Peace” (2017), directed by Heitor Dhalia and photographed by Veloso. The combination of documentary and fiction language was decisive in the choice of the Brazilian cinematographer, who ended up becoming a central figure in the visual construction of the film.

Graduated in cinema in São Paulo, Veloso explored various sectors of the audiovisual industry before dedicating himself fully to cinematography. Throughout his career, he worked on short films, feature films, documentaries, commercials, and music videos, demonstrating technical and aesthetic versatility. Among his music works, highlights include clips such as “Ameianoite”, a collaboration between Pabllo Vittar and Gloria Groove, and “Diamantes, lágrimas e rostos para esquecer”, by rapper BK.

Internationally recognized, the cinematographer maintains a strong connection with Brazilian cinema. His national filmography includes the dramas “Tungstênio” (2018), again with Heitor Dhalia, and “Rodantes” (2021), by Leandro Lara. Since 2019, Veloso has lived in Portugal, where he made the war film “Mosquito” (2020), by João Nuno Pinto, shot between the European country and Mozambique.

Even living outside Brazil, the filmmaker maintains an intense travel schedule, alternating between projects in the United States and frequent visits to his home country. Recently, he finished filming “Remain”, a new feature written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and one of the most anticipated titles in international cinema.

The 98th Oscar ceremony is scheduled for March 15 and will be hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien. Adolpho Veloso’s nomination reinforces Brazil’s presence among the great names in the global film industry and highlights the international recognition of his visual language.
