The Iranian government announced that it will respond severely to the bombing carried out by the United States against three nuclear facilities on its territory. The offensive, executed under orders from US President Donald Trump, marks an unprecedented escalation in tensions between the two countries and, according to Iran, constitutes a “direct violation of national sovereignty.” The statements were released by HispanTV.
“The US government has given free rein to the [Iranian] Armed Forces for any action against its interests and its army, and in this matter we will never back down,” stated the Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Major General Seyed Abdolrahim Musavi. He accused Washington of acting as an extension of what he called the “aggressor Zionist regime,” by directly attacking Iranian territory and deliberately breaking with the basic principles of international law.
The US bombing took place in the early hours of Sunday (22) and targeted sensitive facilities of the Iranian nuclear program. The action follows attacks conducted by Israel against military and civilian targets in Iran, which began on June 13. According to the Tehran government, those attacks resulted in the deaths of nuclear scientists, high-ranking military commanders, and dozens of civilians.
In response, Iran launched Operation “True Promise III,” targeting territories occupied by Israel, and now promises to expand its reaction. “Every time the Americans committed crimes, they received a resounding response, and this time it will be the same,” warned the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Army, Major General Amir Hatami. He participated in a video conference with the top commanders of the country’s Armed Forces and praised the efforts of the Iranian military in the current situation.
Hatami also stated that “the plans drawn up by the Hazrat Jatam al-Anbia General Headquarters and the Army’s Zolfaqar Operational Command must be implemented with creativity, initiative, and intelligence,” and reinforced the Armed Forces’ commitment to defending the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic.
The tone of alert was echoed by Iranian diplomacy. The spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baqai, said that “the United States and the Zionist regime must bear the consequences of this conflict.” He classified the joint attacks as a violation of the United Nations Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and stated that the country will use “its legitimate right to self-defense.”
“The region has been led to an unprecedented danger,” stated Baqai, referring to the regional impact of the bombings and Washington’s direct involvement in the conflict. Although he did not specify how the retaliation will take place, the spokesman reiterated that the response will come at the time and in the form defined by the Iranian authorities. He also criticized President Donald Trump, stating that he “betrayed diplomacy” and can no longer present himself as a defender of dialogue.
At UN headquarters, Iranian ambassador Amir Said Iravani requested an emergency meeting of the Security Council and stated that his country “reserves the full and legitimate right to self-defense.” According to him, the nature, timing, and scale of the response will be defined by the Armed Forces, in accordance with the principles of international law.
Iran accuses the United States of acting in coordination with Israel to destabilize the region and target the Iranian nuclear program, which it considers strategic for its sovereignty. The consequences of the retaliation promised by Tehran remain uncertain, but the growing tension is already causing strong apprehension.
