William Bonner announces departure from Globo’s Jornal Nacional

Journalist and presenter William Bonner announced that he will leave the presentation and the role of editor-in-chief of Jornal Nacional starting November 3, after 29 years at the helm of the newscast. The journalist will continue at TV Globo and, in 2026, will join the Globo Repórter team alongside Sandra Annenberg, the newspaper O Globo reported.

With his departure, César Tralli will be the new presenter of JN, sharing the anchor desk with Renata Vasconcellos. The newsroom leadership will be taken over by Cristiana Souza Cruz, currently deputy editor.

Trajectory and decision

Bonner took over the JN anchor desk in 1996 alongside Lillian Witte Fibe, replacing Sérgio Chapelin and Cid Moreira. He became the anchor with the longest tenure on the program, 29 years, surpassing Cid’s 26.

He stated that the decision is personal and related to his routine. “I’m not ready to retire, I just needed a change of scenery and a new routine.” According to Globo’s journalism director, Ricardo Villela, “William approached us five years ago, expressing a desire to find another path that would give him more time for his personal life”.

The journalist emphasized that family was decisive in the decision. Two of his three children from his marriage to Fátima Bernardes live in France. “Nowadays, the truth is no longer as important, what matters is the version,” Bonner said, acknowledging that his departure may generate speculation.

The arrival of César Tralli

César Tralli has been at Globo since 1993. He was a reporter in São Paulo, correspondent in London, and anchor at GloboNews. Since 2017, he presented Jornal Hoje, in addition to newscasts on the pay channel.

“The reporter job is within me, I love digging up news,” Tralli declared, who will also take on the role of executive editor of JN. Renata Vasconcellos praised the new anchor colleague: “I’m happy to welcome Tralli. In the moments we were together, he always stood out for his commitment and sensitivity.”

Other changes

Tralli’s departure from Jornal Hoje will open space for Roberto Kovalick at the helm of the newscast. Tiago Scheuer will take over Hora Um.

In the new setup, Cristiana Souza Cruz will be promoted to editor-in-chief of JN. “It’s 29 years at the company and I’ve been involved with Jornal Nacional for at least half that time,” the journalist highlighted.
