2023 will be the year of magenta, according to the Pantone Color Institute, an authorized consultancy that has been selecting the “color of the year” for over two decades.
The choice for 2023, “Viva Magenta 18-750,” is described by the consultancy as “a shade rooted in nature that descends from the expressive red family and signals a new strength.”
Other words the company uses to characterize the color – and, by extension, the current cultural moment – include powerful, empowering, electrifying, borderless, bold, and inclusive.
“The last few years have been transformative in many ways in terms of people’s sense of identity and how well-being, priorities, and identity are being thought about,” explained Laurie Pressman, vice president, in a press release. “As a result, a space has been created where we are free to explore and be accepted exactly for who we feel we are, whether in a cyber universe, a conventional space, or a magical mix of both.”
