Violence in the U.S.: Halloween Weekend Saw 11 More Dead in Shootings Across the Country

The weekend leading up to Halloween left parts of the country in mourning due to more mass shootings, which collectively resulted in at least 11 deaths, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

The U.S. continues to grapple with gun violence, and last month, the country surpassed more than 500 mass shootings just in 2023. A shooting is considered mass when at least four people are injured or killed, not including the shooter, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Here’s a summary of some of the shootings over the weekend:
Tampa, Florida

The police are investigating a shooting that left two people dead and at least 18 injured in the Ybor City neighborhood of Tampa, Florida, on Sunday morning. Online videos show a chaotic scene, with people fleeing from gunfire and police tending to the injured. The police believe a fight between two groups “escalated into gunfire.”

Chicago, Illinois

Chicago police responded to a shooting on Sunday morning in which 15 people were shot, according to an official statement.

Authorities said the victims, aged between 26 and 53, were taken to the hospital. Two of the victims, aged 26 and 48, are in “critical condition,” according to the Chicago police, who stated that the investigation is ongoing.

“The officers who responded to a shots fired call in the area approached and observed an unknown man shooting at the location where a gathering was taking place,” the police said, adding that “the shooter fled on foot and is being sought.”

Another shooting in Chicago on Saturday morning left four people hospitalized, one of whom is in critical condition, according to CBS Chicago.

Texarkana, Texas

In Texarkana, Texas, three people died following a shooting on Saturday, the Texarkana Police Department said in a statement. Three others are recovering in the hospital.

The six people shot are between the ages of 19 and 31, authorities said.

Apparently, it all started with a fight between two men at a party. At some point, at least two men pulled out rifles and began shooting,” the department said.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Authorities said one person was killed in a shooting on Sunday morning in Indianapolis, Indiana, and nine others were injured.
<br“When officers arrived in the area, they reported hearing gunfire and observed a large crowd dispersing from the location,” the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, other shootings occurred in Decatur, Georgia; Cumberland, Maryland; Lake Charles, Louisiana; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; Dodge City, Kansas; and Mansfield, Ohio. In addition to the 11 dead, all these shootings left at least 27 injured.

The weekend shootings occurred after the shooting in Lewiston, Maine, on October 25 – the deadliest mass shooting so far in 2023 – which left 18 people dead and more than a dozen injured.
