Use of Masks No Longer Mandatory in Brazilian Airports and Airplanes

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) lifted the requirement for mask use in airports and airplanes in Brazil on Wednesday (1st).

Considering an improvement in the transmission of covid-19 in Brazil, with a reduction in the number of cases and deaths compared to 2022, Anvisa’s directors decided to maintain only the recommendation for mask use in airports and airplanes, especially for more vulnerable groups and individuals with respiratory symptoms.

According to the announcement, the following measures remain in effect in the country: disembarkation of passengers by rows; prohibition of travel for confirmed covid-19 cases; requirement for cleaning of environments and air conditioning units; and audible alerts regarding the recommendation for mask use in airports and aircraft.

The mask mandate in airports and airplanes in Brazil had been reinstated in November of last year, in light of an anticipated increase in disease cases. A few weeks later, the country reached a new peak of covid-19 infections, with 350,000 new cases. In the last 14 days, 102,576 (0.28%) cases and 1,303 (0.19%) deaths were recorded.
