Listeria Outbreak in 6 States Linked to Contaminated Cold Cuts and Cheeses

A listeria outbreak in six states has been linked to contaminated cold cuts and cheeses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday, November 9.

People at high risk for severe illness from listeria infection – such as pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems – should not eat meats or cheeses from any deli counter without first heating them, the agency suggests.

A total of 16 people have been infected and 13 have been hospitalized, according to reports from six states. One death has been reported in Maryland; another person became ill during pregnancy and lost her baby, the CDC said in a statement.

So far, seven listeria infections have been reported in New York, three in Maryland, two in Illinois, two in Massachusetts, one in California, and one in New Jersey. The infected individuals ranged in age from 38 to 92 years, with an average age of 74. More than half of those affected were men.
What is listeriosis?

Listeriosis is the disease resulting from a bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which can be found in soil, iodine, and water. It can be transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water and food, such as unpasteurized milk, cheeses, vegetables, seafood, and sausages.
Symptoms

The symptoms of listeriosis vary depending on the health status of the infected person and may be asymptomatic. However, patients with weakened immune systems or altered general health may present symptoms between the 3rd and 60th day after contamination. Symptoms include: fever above 38°C, muscle aches, headaches, loss of appetite, chills, vomiting, fatigue, mental confusion, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, where the bacterium enters the bloodstream and reaches the nervous system, the carrier may develop meningitis, and it can also cause the death of the baby in pregnant women.
Treatment

Listeriosis is treatable, and the treatment is based on antibiotics recommended by the doctor according to each case. In cases of significant fluid loss, good hydration is essential.
