Madonna’s Show at Copacabana Beach Expected to Attract 1.5 Million

The city of Rio de Janeiro expects 1.5 million people to attend Madonna’s show in Copacabana on Saturday, May 4. A plan similar to the one traditionally adopted for New Year’s Eve has been announced by municipal, state, and federal authorities.

According to city officials, Madonna is set to take the stage at 9:45 PM for a two-hour show. However, the event is scheduled to start with DJ performances at 7 PM and end at 2 AM. The show will be broadcasted by 18 towers located in front of and behind the stage, which will be positioned in front of the world-famous Copacabana Palace.

A total of 170 extra flights have been confirmed between May 1 and 6, connecting the marvelous city to 27 national destinations, according to the municipal tourism company Riotur. A 30% increase in traffic is also expected at the Novo Rio Bus Station on May 3 and 4.

“The expectation is that hotels will reach maximum occupancy [in Copacabana] and the city’s economy is expected to generate R$ 300 million, creating jobs and income. We hope to deliver this spectacle in the best possible way, not only for us, Cariocas, but for the whole world,” said Riotur president Patrick Corrêa.

In addition to the onshore audience, 226 boats will anchor 200 meters from the coastline, port authorities reported.

Security

The Military Police will mobilize 3,200 officers solely in Copacabana and will reinforce patrolling in the surrounding areas.

In addition to the facial recognition cameras already in operation, 12 more will be installed in the neighborhood, along with two drones equipped with the technology. The security scheme will also include eighteen search points along Avenida Atlântica with metal detectors. Sharp objects or glass bottles will not be allowed on the beach.
