Your American Passport Can Be Renewed Online. See If You Qualify?

The U.S. Department of State reopened its online passport renewal portal on Wednesday (12), bringing back an experimental service that had not been available for over a year.

The service, available to a limited number of travelers who meet certain requirements, is part of a beta program aimed at streamlining the passport renewal process for Americans. For now, the program is only available for routine renewals, not for emergency services.

Every day starting at 1 PM (Eastern Time), the Department of State will accept a limited number of applications. The idea is to gradually increase the daily capacity.

Once the portal reaches its daily limit, it will close until the following afternoon, senior officials from the Department of State said at a press conference.

Online application does not guarantee faster processing time, but it means saving some time by avoiding mailing the application.

To be eligible for the online system, travelers must be U.S. citizens aged 25 or older who already possess a 10-year valid passport, among other requirements. Here are some examples of those other requirements:

• Applicants cannot request a change of name, gender, date of birth, or place of birth on the application.

• They will not be traveling internationally for at least eight weeks from the day they submit their application.

• They are applying for only a regular passport and have the current passport (it cannot be lost, stolen, damaged, or mutilated).

• They can pay with a credit or debit card and can upload a digital passport photo in JPEG file format.

• The recent passport was issued between nine and 15 years before the renewal application date (it may be expired).

The complete requirements are available on the Department of State’s website. Those who do not qualify for the online renewal process can still apply for the service by mail.

This is the second round of public testing of the online renewal system, which was first announced in 2021 through an executive order and was suspended in March 2023. According to the Department of State’s website, over 500,000 customers applied during that initiative.

Officials said the next round of public testing is expected to last several months, but did not specify how many applications will be accepted per day. The gradual nature of the launch was designed to monitor user feedback and address issues that may arise.

How long is it currently taking to obtain or renew an American passport?

According to the Department of State’s website, normal processing takes 6 to 8 weeks, expedited processing takes 2 to 3 weeks, and urgent processing, by personal appointment, requires the individual to have an international trip scheduled within 14 days.
