Santa Teresa Tram is Open – The Brasilians

Santa Teresa Tram is Open

A typical neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Santa Teresa was born around a convent in the 18th century and now occupies a hillside in the heart of the city. A reference in fine arts, the narrow streets of the neighborhood buzz with dozens of art studios and vintage trams, which can only be found in Rio and the city of Santos, in the state of São Paulo.

The original features of the Santa Teresa tram have been preserved, and its external characteristics were declared a national heritage by the State Government in 1983. The journey begins in the downtown area, passing by the Arcos da Lapa and the slopes of the neighborhood, and by tourist attractions such as Parque das Ruínas – a viewpoint with an incredible view of Rio de Janeiro.

Escadaria Selarón [Selarón Steps] is just 5 minutes from the Arcos da Lapa, connecting Santa Teresa to the Lapa neighborhood, decorated with colorful tiles from various corners of the world. The staircase was conceived by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón.

You can also pass by the Metropolitan Cathedral or the Theatro Municipal on your way back to the station.
