The city of Rio de Janeiro declared a state of emergency on Monday (5) due to the increase in hospitalizations for suspected dengue cases, officially recognizing the existence of an epidemic of the disease.
Data released on Friday revealed that the city of Rio de Janeiro has already recorded more than 10,000 dengue cases this year, nearly half of the total for all of 2023 (22,959). The incidence rate of the disease is 160.68 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The city of Rio confirmed on Wednesday (7) the first death from dengue in 2024. According to the Municipal Health Department, it involves a 45-year-old man who was being treated at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of the Maré Complex. The Health Department also reported that three other deaths occurring in 2024 are under investigation for suspected dengue.
The areas of the city with the highest incidence of the disease are the regions of Campo Grande and Guaratiba, in the west zone, with 476 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants.
Last Friday (2), local authorities presented a contingency plan to tackle the epidemic, with measures to assist the population and combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the transmitter of the dengue virus.
