The city of Rio de Janeiro declared a state of emergency on Monday (5) due to the increase in hospitalizations for suspected dengue cases, officially recognizing that there is an epidemic of the disease in place.
Data released on Friday (2) revealed that the city of Rio de Janeiro has already recorded more than 10,000 cases of dengue this year, nearly half of the total for all of 2023 (22,959). The incidence rate of the disease is 160.68 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The city hall of Rio confirmed on Wednesday (7) the first death from dengue in 2024. According to the Municipal Health Department, it involves a 45-year-old man who was receiving care at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of the Complexo da Maré. The Health Department also reported that other deaths that occurred in 2024 are under investigation for suspected dengue.
The areas of the city with the highest incidence of the disease are the regions of Campo Grande and Guaratiba, in the west zone, with 476 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants.
Last Friday (2), local authorities announced a contingency plan to address the epidemic, including measures for public care and combating the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the transmitter of the dengue virus.
