President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva highlighted, in a year-end interview, that the population will reap the results of the restructuring and relaunching of programs and policies that have been resumed and implemented since the beginning of his administration.
“Everything we planned to do, so far, has been accomplished. Everything. We created the New PAC and launched all the programs that needed to be launched. I have told my ministers: we have already planted. Now, in 2025, it is the year of harvest. We will start to reap what we have sown. It is an honorable commitment of mine,” assured President Lula, who emphasized the good indicators of the country’s economic growth and historical employment rates.
The highlights of Lula’s interview:
• TAX REFORM — We do not want to implement a reform to increase taxes. We believe that if Brazil collects the taxes already established by law correctly, Brazil will have enough revenue to take care of things. There is no need to raise taxes. Now, this proposal approved by the Federal Senate will return to the Chamber of Deputies, which had already approved it in the Chamber.
• FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY — The fiscal package was sent to the National Congress, which has the authority to change things. No one in this country, no one, I repeat: no one in this country has more fiscal responsibility than I do. This is not the first time I have been President of the Republic. I have governed this country and delivered it with a growth rate of 7.5%. I delivered this country with the largest payroll. I delivered this country in a very privileged situation. That is what I want to do again. And it is not the market that has to worry about government spending, it is the government. Because if I do not control spending, if I spend more than I have, who will pay? The poor people.
• INTEREST RATES — The only thing wrong in this country is that the interest rate is above 12%. There is no explanation. Inflation is just above four, it is a totally controlled inflation.
• MERCOSUR AND THE EUROPEAN UNION — The concrete fact is that I went to Uruguay, participated in the Mercosur meeting, and we made the agreement with the European Union (EU), which was an extremely important agreement. It is not an agreement that will work in the short term; it will take time because there are 720 million inhabitants involved in the agreement and a GDP of 22 trillion. Therefore, the potential is very large, we just need to be patient.
