Who Is Crossing the American Border?

A new study from USA Facts examined immigration at the United States borders between October 2019 and June of this year. The data highlights where people are coming from and how apprehensions have increased in recent years.What does the study say?– The Border Patrol reported nearly 7.7 million crossings at the border between October 2019 and June 2023. Over 430,000 of these crossings included unaccompanied minors.- Crossings increased by 66% between February and March 2021 and remained comparatively high. Monthly crossings peaked in December 2022, with over 300,000 people.- Approximately 660,000 people evaded detention when crossing the border in the fiscal year 2021. This number is higher than from 2014 to 2020 (an average of 160,000 people per year), but lower than any year between 2000 and 2010.- Between October 2019 and June 2023, over 30% of immigrants detained or denied entry came from Mexico, followed by Honduras (9.2%), Guatemala (9.0%), Venezuela (5.8%), and Cuba (5.8%). About 145,000 Brazilians crossed the border during this period.- 82.8% of the crossings reported during the studied period occurred along the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Texas had the highest number of crossings – 49.6% – followed by Arizona with 17.9% and California with 14.0%.It is important to highlight that these numbers refer to crossings that were intercepted, meaning they ended in the detention of the immigrant, expulsion, or denial of entry due to ineligibility.
