The age at which Americans can claim their full retirement has been steadily increasing. Currently, those born in 1960 or later will need to wait until they are 67 years and one month old to reach the age at which their benefits will be paid in full.
However, a worker can start receiving their retirement at age 62, but in that case, they will receive a reduced payment. On the other hand, if the worker decides to wait beyond age 67, they will earn more money as they will be working and contributing for a longer time.
If you were born in 1954 or earlier, your age for receiving full retirement is 66 years. This means there will be no penalties for you. The average monthly check for this group of retirees is $3,627 per month.
In 2023, the average payments for all retirees enrolled in Social Security increased to approximately $1,827, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
However, if you retire in 2023 at age 62, your maximum benefit will be around $2,572.
But if you wait until age 70 to claim retirement, the maximum benefit you can receive jumps to over $4,000.
