Russian President Vladimir Putin called President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday (18) to share information about his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska last Friday (15). Putin told Lula that the meeting was positive. The Russian and the American met seeking an agreement to end the war in Ukraine.
In the approximately 30-minute call, the Russian president addressed the various topics discussed with Trump and acknowledged Brazil’s involvement with the Group of Friends of Peace. The initiative led by Brazil and China seeks to establish common understandings to support global efforts to achieve peace, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has lasted more than three years.
“President Lula thanked for the call and reaffirmed Brazil’s support for all efforts leading to a peaceful solution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He also wished success to the continued negotiations,” states the statement from the Planalto Palace.
After the Friday meeting, Trump and Putin stated that they had made progress toward an agreement, but did not detail what that understanding would be. This Monday, the U.S. president meets with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
