The Minister of Education, Mendonça Filho, participated in the inauguration of the first American university founded by Brazilians and aimed at immigrants.
The Miami University of Science and Technology (Must) is the first national investment in higher education in the United States. One of the founders is Brazilian professor Antônio Carbonari Netto (photo), a member of the National Education Council (CNE).
The idea of the institution is to promote the social inclusion of Brazilian workers and others and create opportunities for the job market. According to the minister, the university will ensure access to high-quality higher education and value Brazilians living in the United States.
“We need to view Brazilians living abroad as citizens in their entirety, who need our attention, respect, and welcome,” declared the minister, highlighting the educational advancements offered by Must University. “Our youth will have a broader field from a professional and personal perspective.”
Antônio Carbonari also sees the initiative as an important tool for social inclusion. “A university degree represents a better life plan, enhancing employability and ascent within the community they belong to. Moreover, we will make it possible for people who work all day to have the opportunity to study at night or through online education,” he added.
Carbonari covered 60% of the capital invested in the institution. The remaining 40% is the responsibility of American John Peterson, who is in charge of the academic area, and Brazilian business administrator Fernando Ruiz.
The forecast is that the educational institution will start the enrollment process in August.
