In another step of the process to welcome Venezuelans arriving in the country, 230 immigrants who were housed in Boa Vista (RR) have been transferred to the municipalities of Porto Alegre, Canoas, Esteio, and Cachoeirinha in Rio Grande do Sul, as well as Curitiba, PR. With this, the number of Venezuelan immigrants sent to other Brazilian states since last April exceeds 2,200.
According to the Civil House, the interiorization aims to help Venezuelans find better living conditions in other states. All voluntarily agree to participate in the program and are vaccinated, undergo health examinations, and are regularized in Brazil – including obtaining CPF and work permits.
The Minister of Social Development, Alberto Beltrame, emphasized the importance of interiorization, both for offering new opportunities to
Venezuelans and for reducing the burden on services in Northern Brazil. “We are seeing that this is a correct policy. Success occurs as states and municipalities are willing to receive foreigners and welcome them properly, reducing the pressure in Roraima,” the minister highlighted.
Currently, Boa Vista and Pacaraima have 12 shelters for the accommodation of immigrants. Together, they can serve about six thousand people.
The program for the interiorization of Venezuelans began in April and, so far, is responsible for the transfer of 2,206 immigrants to municipalities in São Paulo, Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Pernambuco, Paraíba, and the Federal District.
Developed with the aim of assisting Venezuelans arriving in the country to find better living conditions in other states of Brazil, the interiorization program is supported by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the UN Migration Agency (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
