Bilateral Social Security Agreement between Brazil and the U.S. Takes Effect

Three years after the signing of the Bilateral Social Security Agreement between Brazil and the United States, the agreement was enacted in Brazil through Decree No. 9.422/2018.

According to the text of the Decree, starting in October 2018, Brazilians residing in the United States who have contributed to Social Security and are currently contributing to Social Security but do not have the necessary contribution time to retire will now be able to combine the contribution time from both countries to receive benefits in one.

The agreement covers the following benefits: retirement by age, death pension, and disability retirement.

However, those who do not contribute to Social Security will not benefit from this agreement. In this case, undocumented Brazilian immigrants can secure Brazilian social security coverage. To do this, they must continue making monthly contributions in Brazil as voluntary contributors, in order to ensure the contribution time for future retirement and also secure the death pension for their dependents.
