Route of Emotions: Three Destinations in Northeast Itinerary

Starting from São Luis (MA), Fortaleza (CE), or the new airport in Jericoacoara (CE), tourists can explore the natural beauties of a route full of attractions that pass through the national parks of Lençóis Maranhenses and Jericoacoara, until reaching the Environmental Protection Area of the Parnaíba Delta (PI). The journey, filled with adventure, also provides visitors with gastronomic experiences and cultural immersion in communities surrounded by dunes and a peculiar lifestyle.

The itinerary, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, is ideal for those seeking experiential tourism and takes travelers through 14 municipalities. Starting the route from Barreirinhas, known as the “Portal of Lençóis Maranhenses,” tourists encounter an extensive area of moving dunes, filled with lagoons, accessible by traction vehicles.

At sunset, the white dunes take on a golden hue. Along the lençóis, the boat ride on the Preguiças River is another attraction to explore the lençóis from a different angle, with strategic stops in the villages of Vassouras (swimming), Mandacaru (lighthouse), and the beaches of Caburé and Atins, at the river’s mouth. The first stage of this triple emotion also includes the cities of Santo Amaro and Paulino Neves, with plenty of adventure through dunes, beaches, and lagoons. At the other end of this natural paradise is Tutóia, with an extensive deserted beach.

Still in Maranhão, Araióses opens the way to the Parnaíba Delta, an Environmental Protection Area with dozens of islands, bordering Piauí. Ecotourism is present in the lush landscape of the islands, dunes, lagoons, and rivers suitable for swimming, boat rides, and activities like canoeing, kayaking, and sailing sports. Tours depart from Ilha Grande and the bucolic and historic Parnaíba, the “Capital of the Delta.” Two more coastal cities in Piauí are part of the emotional itinerary with the lagoons of Luis Correia; primitive beaches, including Barra Grande, in Cajueiro da Praia, where the new “largest cashew tree in the world” is located; rivers and mangroves that preserve species like the Manatee and the Seahorse.

The emotions continue in Ceará, starting with Chaval and Barroquinha. In Camocim, the colonial architecture enriches the natural landscape of the Coreaú River bathing the Island of Love. There are 62 km of beaches framed by coconut trees, cliffs, mangroves, lagoons, and dunes. A setting where artisanal fishing and sports activities are predominant, practiced by tourists exploring the extreme west of the Ceará coast.

Cruz and Jericoacoara, accessible by shuttle, complete the route with tours through the dunes, Pedra Furada, and the relaxing sway of hammocks submerged in the lagoons Grande and Paraiso. By quadricycle, buggy, 4×4, or on horseback, tourists reach the main attractions and Tatajuba or Preá at the ends of Jericoacoara. Watch the sun set over the sea and enjoy the night!

The coastline of this stretch of the Northeast is perfect for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing, among other water sports practiced at the mercy of the winds, even in the lagoons. The sun and beach scenery integrates nature with the pleasures of delicious regional cuisine. Tourists also travel through the fascinating northeastern culture and the unique handicrafts of the three states. These include pieces made from plant fibers (buriti, tucun, taboa, coconut, carnauba, and sisal), wood, ceramics, lace, embroidery, leather, seeds, and shells. An intriguing and delightfully exciting journey!

The nature and adventure destination integrates the Route of Emotions, along with the Parnaíba Delta (PI) and the National Park of Lençóis Maranhenses (MA). The three destinations make up the itinerary filled with natural attractions and options for extreme sports, in addition to gastronomy and handicrafts.

The village of Alter do Chão, in Santarém (PA), is expected to be the most sought-after river beach destination in the North region. The place is known for its white sandbanks bathed by the transparent waters of the Tapajós River. In the search for alternative destinations within the country, Alter do Chão emerges as a trend. From there, experience tourism expeditions depart to riverside communities that live off extractivism in the forest. A survey conducted by the Kayak website shows Manaus (AM) among the destinations that had a significant increase in searches by interested tourists. Users’ searches suggest the capital of Amazonas, on the banks of the Negro River, as a trend for domestic tourism in 2019. Manaus is already one of the main destinations for foreign tourists visiting Amazonas, having received 33,627 foreigners in 2017.
